Perler Bead Bowl - A Simple Build Your Own Gift

My kids love making flat perler bead designs, so we have thousands of little beads floating around the house. We decided to mix things up and make a 3-D project out of them. A perler bead bowl makes a beautiful centerpiece and a just-for-you gift for any friend.

What Are Perler Beads?

Perler beads are little beads that fuse when heat is applied. Typically the beads are placed in your desired design on a small pegboard. An iron is then applied over the design and the beads melt together to create your finished masterpiece. Perler beads can easily be found at a craft store or online and are typically inexpensive.

What Size beads should I use?

Perler beads typically come in the small size pictured above (beads on the left). But they have a larger size bead too. (beads on the right).

I made bowls using both sizes of beads.

  • black and pink beaded bowl - large perler beads

  • white, pink, purple beaded bowl - small perler beads

  • multi-colored beaded bowl - large perler beads

After experimenting with the different size beads, I prefer the large beads over the small ones.

  1. The finished perler bead bowl using the large size beads is much sturdier and doesn't feel fragile like the small beaded bowl.

  2. It was much quicker to sort out the colors I wanted using the large beads

  3. I could create a pattern with the large beads, I could have created a pattern with the small beads, but it would have taken a long time.

Is The Perler Bead Bowl Food-Safe?

No, do not put food in your perler bowl. The beaded bowl is a perfect decoration or to store keys or little toys in.

Does Melting The Beaded Bowl Have A Bad Smell?

I did not notice much of a smell while melting my bowls. But I did have my oven hood fan running, and I do not have a sensitive nose. If you think it will bother you, plan to do this project on a day when you can open the windows.

Perler Bead Bowl:

Supplies:

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 Degrees.

  2. Spray an oven-safe glass bowl with cooking spray. The cooking spray will help hold the perler beads in place while designing your perler bead bowl.

  3. Sort the colors of perler beads that you will be using.

  4. Starting at the bottom of the glass bowl place the perler beads in a single layer. The beads need to be close together to melt together. The higher up you build the perler beads up the side of the bowl, the taller the finished piece you will achieve.

  5. Put the glass bowl with the beads into your oven on the middle rack. Cook the big perler bead bowl for 30 minutes and the small beaded bowls for 20 minutes.

  6. Being very careful, an adult should take the bowl out of the oven (it will be very hot!) Let it cool for 20-30 minutes.

  7. Using the back of a metal spoon gently place in between the glass bowl and the beaded bowl. Go around the bowls and gently pry out the beaded bowl.

  8. Rinse your beaded bowl in running water to remove the cooking spray.
